The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934)

I'd once made the mistake of watching the sticky, badly cast color version from the '50s; fortunately the original is infinitely superior. Charles Laughton successfully makes you want to punch his paterfamilias Barrett every time he sticks his beady incestuous eyes in the room, Norma Shearer suffers beautifully, and Fredric March plays Robert Browning as the world's most handsome geek.
